Dubai:  A notable trend towards astro-tourism has emerged among residents of the UAE, reflecting an increasing interest in celestial phenomena. According to Skyscanner's latest report, searches from the UAE to Tromso, Norway—a renowned destination for its spectacular Aurora Borealis—have surged by 92% year-on-year

The Skyscanner survey indicates that over half of respondents are keen to participate in astro-tourism activities, with 53% interested in capturing night sky photographs, 51% wishing to sleep under the stars, and 43% aiming to witness the northern lights. These findings underscore the allure of celestial experiences among UAE travellers.

According to a recent study, 80% of Americans and one-third of the planet’s population can no longer see the Milky Way from their homes because of light pollution. As a consequence, most people have to travel to witness meteor showers and other common astronomical events.

Furthermore, the report reveals that astro-tourism intertwines with the mystical aspects of astrology. A significant portion of UAE travellers, particularly those in Generation X, express interest in the effects of planetary and lunar events on their emotions and travel plans, with 61% believing these phenomena influence their experiences.

Expert advice on astro-tourism

Astronaut Kellie Gerardi emphasized the importance of early planning and flexibility in astro-tourism. “If your schedules don’t align with a significant celestial event, you can still enjoy breathtaking views year-round at locations like Mauna Kea in Hawaii or dark sky parks such as Galloway Forest Park in Scotland,” she advised.

Emerging travel trends for 2025

According to Skyscanner's study, 2025 is anticipated to be the year of collective travel experiences. This includes themes like gami-vacation, art-venture, wellness tourism, and nature-focused journeys.

Notably, 81% of UAE residents plan to choose destinations based on locations from their favourite video games, highlighting a shift towards more engaging and unique travel experiences.

The importance of travel for mental health

The study also underscores the mental health benefits of travel, with 91% of UAE travellers agreeing that vacations can enhance resilience and help manage everyday stress. “We’re excited to see travellers embracing community and discovery, transforming each trip into a memorable story of togetherness,” said Ayoub El Mamoun, a travel expert at Skyscanner.
